The Circle Skirt Calculator by Oyeyemifash was created out of the need to make drafting and sewing circle skirts easy and fun, without the need for complex maths and at the same time calculate, with accuracy, the quantity of fabric required for the desired style/volume.

You set the waist circumference, desired skirt length and desired waistband height, choose any of the eight (Yes! 8!) different skirt volumes and the fabric width (i.e. either by 45″ or by 60″ width fabric) and the app calculates the waist radius, pattern cutting measurements and quantity of fabric required to make the desired skirt. The calculator can also be used for circle skirts with pleats/gathers and tiers either as standalone or in dresses, as well as peplums, flounces, cascades, and frills which can basically be attached anywhere for both kids and adults.

The next step is to draft your pattern, cut your fabric and sew your skirt. Don’t forget the pocket pieces and waistband!

  1. The waist seam allowance of 0.5″ and hem allowance of 1″ has been factored into the pattern radius measurement given by the app. (If a longer/shorter hem allowance is required please add/subtract the difference to/from the Skirt Length)
  2. The Waist Circumference is the length of the waist or the seam line the skirt piece is to be attached to the plus seam allowance.
  3. The Skirt Length denotes the finished length of the skirt or pattern piece: i.e. from the top of the skirt band or seam (in the case of a band-less skirt piece) to the hem.
  4. The Band Height is the finished height of the desired waistband which can be set to 0 for a band-less skirt piece, such as in peplum/flounce/frill/cascade attached to the bodice of gowns, tops, sleeves, or any other existing seam line.
  5. You will get a value of “0” as the required fabric quantity when your skirt volume and/or measurements will not fit onto the chosen fabric width of either 45″ or 60″ fabric.
  6. For circle skirts with pleats or gathers, the waist circumference, W, will be equal to the actual waist measurement * gather factor (e.g. = W * 1.5) or plus pleats (e.g. = W + pleats).
  7. All measurements are in inches while fabric yardage is provided in both yards and meters.
